Riverfront Park Bridge Reopens with Ribbon Cutting Celebration

parrcoordinator

On December 17th, Pottstown Borough hosted a ribbon-cutting at the pedestrian bridge over the Manatawny Creek in Riverfront Park. The event celebrated the completion of the bridge repair and streambank restoration project that took place throughout 2024. The bridge was one of two pedestrian bridges that were severely damaged by floodwaters in 2019 which necessitated its closure. The project scope included fortification of the streambank with stone and plantings, removal of debris from the stream channel, installation of safety fencing, and the replacement of the bridge decking. Funding was provided by Montgomery County, the Pottstown Area Health & Wellness Foundation, and a private donor. The bridge is an important stream crossing for the Schuylkill River Trail (SRT), which runs through the park, and benefits the public by reconnecting the two sides of Riverfront Park, increasing accessibility, park function and pedestrian circulation in this area of town.

Guest speakers included County Commissioner Thomas DiBello, Pottstown Borough Council President Dan Weand, and David Kraybill, Executive Director of the Pottstown Area Health & Wellness Foundation Parks and Recreation Director Michael Lenhart. Mr. Lenhart managed the bridge project from start to finish. Herbert, Rowland & Grubic, Inc. (HRG) was the project's engineering consultant.

The opening of the Riverfront Park bridge represents one of the last SRT projects in Montgomery County. The final project is the development of a 0.95-mile section of the SRT between Industrial Highway and the Route 422 Bridge in Pottstown. Construction is expected to be complete by late 2025.
